Why Sky Broadband’s 5 Mbps Is Not For Me

Sky Broadband recently launched their 5 Mbps program. That’s 5 Mbps internet speed for only 999 Php per month. I am a Sky subscriber and is paying 2k monthly for 2 Mbps plan, so what’s the catch? That’s 5 Mbps for 999 per month for 15GB usage.

15 GB what? That’s the amount of data that a user can download or upload every month.. But where does 15GB will bring you? According to Life at 5 Mbps site:
15GB is good for any of the following:
* Unlimited access to social networking sites for the whole month
* Can download up to (may vary depending on the file size)
- 3,750 songs
- 25 movies
* 125 hrs of non-stop YouTube/iWantv! playback
* 586 hrs of Skype talk time

Let’s make it clear, unlimited access to social networking does not iclude upload and download of photo, right? And the list above is actually not what you will get from a 10 GB, it clearly says ANY of the following, so it can be the social networking site access or download songs or movies. In terms of movies that’s 25 movies and if you compute it, that’s almost 40 PhP per movie… not bad huh considering that you can download it that fast.

But it is not for me as I upload and download photos in huge amount and because of Google Alert, I receive more than 1 hundred email a day. When I calculated my usage, I exceed the 15 GB allowed.

    hello, yes .. going to social networking sites uses internet .. right? .. and whenever you connect to the internet, it will start sending and receiving kilobytes .. and so .. there will be volume ( which is the sum of SENT and RECEIVED k.bytes )

    so .. just by connecting to the internet, it will automatically consume the 15gb, but only little size .. if you will go to social networking sites or any website, the internet will SEND more KBs and will RECEIVE more KBs and it will make the volume bigger

    This is B.S. 15GB may be worth 25 movies if you are okay with low quality videos. If you are like me, who prefers movies with at least 720p resolution, you can only download up to 3 movies.

    Putting a cap on download and upload size is bullshit. Better go with a provider with a ‘decent’ speed and UNLIMITED download/upload.
